Special Projects
Northumberland County takes on a wide range of projects that keep waste out of the landfill and improve efficiencies in waste management.
Brighton landfill improvements
The last remaining landfill in Northumberland County is located in Brighton. To keep the landfill open as long as possible while minimizing risks to groundwater, we had to dig up historical waste from previous years and relocate it to new, properly lined areas to stop leachate from entering the ground. We then lined the areas where we had removed the historical waste. Now, we are able to use these newly lined areas for current waste.
This project added approximately 10 years of capacity to the landfill and greatly diminished the environmental impacts on local ground and surface water sources.
Waste Management Plan
The Long-term Waste Management Master Plan guides our programs and services to achieve our long-term goal of keeping 75% of residential waste out of the landfill.

Community Recycling Centres
County landfill and transfer stations are now Community Recycling Centres. You can still take garbage to these locations but we have increased their recycling options over the years to include:
- Household hazardous waste (year-round during designated days at Brighton and Bewdley CRCs)
- Electronic waste
- Bulky plastics
- Styrofoam packaging
- Tires
- Clothing
- Leaf and yard waste
- Household recycling
- Scrap metal
- Large appliances (white goods)
- Drywall
We are redesigning these locations to maximize space, improve traffic flow and enable new diversion programs in the near future for materials like mattresses, dimensional lumber and asphalt shingles.
